Special Letters to Heaven post box officially opened by local mayor

Chris White Funeral Directors in Wilton have installed a Letters to Heaven post box to allow people to send messages to their lost loved ones.

It was officially opened at special ceremony attended by local vicars, councillors and the Mayor and Mayoress of Wilton.

Special compostable paper can be used to write the letters on, allowing them to be replanted when the box is full.

Anyone can make use of the box, and don’t have to have any connection to Chris White Funeral Directors.

Funeral Arranger at Chris White Funeral Directors, Sophie Nias-Cooper said: “The post boxes are popping up around the country in Crematoriums and Funeral Directors.

“The idea behind them is to bring peace and closure to people who are missing their loved ones, as putting thoughts to paper can help to ease depression, heal from trauma and cope with grief.

“You can write a message on a card or paper and ‘send’ it to the person who has passed. You can do this on special occasions, like Christmas or birthdays or anytime throughout the year.

“None of the letters will ever be opened or read by ourselves and they will be securely disposed of when the time comes.”

To complement the new post box, local artist Michelle Milledge produced a stunning window display featuring birds pictured carrying the letters.

Mayor of Wilton, Alan Crossley said a few words before cutting the small ribbon, officially opening the postbox and was the first person to put a letter into the box.
